RSS 2015

Pittsburgh Health Brigade was pleased as punch to participate in Rhinestone Steel 2015. We tabled at a Saturday night event at Spirit Hall, and facilitated a conversation at Boom Concepts on Sunday afternoon. Here are notes and pics from the Sunday conversation, which was very interesting and moving for us!

AGENDA

  • INTRO – Us + You, Goals + Desires, Bravery
  • SHARING + GATHERING
    • Ideals
    • Impacts
    • Frustrations
    • Wishes
  • MORE ON THE PROJECT

BRAVER SPACE THINGS

  • One Diva, One Mic.
  • No one knows everything, together we know a lot.
  • Speak from your own experience.
  • Move up, listen up.
  • Make space for emotion.
  • There is nothing wrong with silence.
  • Recognition that everyone has different experiences with the world and with healthcare based on their life experiences and oppression.

GOALS AND DESIRES

  • For people to feel energized and hopeful
  • To create an open, braver space for people to share healthcare desires, needs, frustrations
  • For us to treat people as experts in their healthcare
  • To crowdsource ideas and info to enhance our project

LOVELY IMPACTS

  • Really cool: if more people would seek care, more care gotten and more education for and understanding by providers
  • Ripple effect: if I can, can encourage others to also! and if I get it, can be there for others
  • Better health outcomes builds confidence and hope. Especially for marginalized people when more needs are met. When provider validates and helps us communicate openly and share info we can also help friends and loved ones.
  • More alternative health care options, more power and certainty in self. JOY.
  • More WHOLE. Honoring others’ wholeness + complexity. More trust of self and self care. More acceptance and encouragement.
  • Basic needs met = love and energy to other areas.

FRUSTRATING IMPACTS

  • Shame
  • Anxiety
  • Self-Blame
  • No authority over our bodies and lives
  • Low bar – possibilities, expectations
  • Fear of being a burden
  • Prolonging issue
  • Fear of aging
  • Fear of having needs
  • Limited ideas of contribution
  • Can’t be good to people, accessible
  • Can affect others’ health
  • Low self-worth
  • Not deserving of care belief
  • Marginalized = not worthy
  • Giving up
  • Unenlightened providers accepting that we can’t heal
  • The message is You’re Sick
  • Hopelessness
  • Choicelessness
